Many hesitate to call, especially in unsafe situations. Together we built an AI chatbot that helps 24/7 anonymously.

Thousands of people visit the website monthly looking for information — from recognising warning signs to understanding the reporting process. Many of them hesitate to call, especially from unsafe situations.

The barrier to seeking help

For people in or around a situation of domestic violence or abuse, the barrier to calling is enormous. They want to remain anonymous, want to first understand their options before taking a step, and sometimes do not have the space to hold a phone conversation.

The existing website offered a great deal of information, but navigating through that information in a stressful situation is difficult. People wanted direct answers to their specific questions, at any time of day or night.

A chatbot built on verified information

Together with Veilig Thuis we implemented an AI chatbot that provides reliable information based on Veilig Thuis's own, verified content. The chatbot helps visitors navigate safety planning, reporting procedures and available support — anonymously and around the clock.

The chatbot is designed for a sensitive audience. It only provides information based on verified sources, is transparent about its limitations as a digital assistant, and always refers users needing personal guidance to Veilig Thuis professionals.

The chatbot lowers the barrier for people who are not yet ready to call, but are already looking for information.

Responsible AI in a sensitive context

This project shows how AI can be deployed responsibly in a socially sensitive context. The chatbot is not a replacement for human care workers — it lowers the threshold, reaches people who would otherwise not seek help, and guides them towards the right professional support when they are ready for it.
