AI image generation has changed the production of marketing materials. But which tool do you choose for which purpose? Midjourney, DALL-E and Adobe Firefly each have their own strengths and limitations.
Producing marketing images traditionally required time, budget and a photography team. AI tools have lowered that barrier. But the three most widely used tools, Midjourney, DALL-E and Adobe Firefly, behave differently and are suited to different applications.
Of the three, Midjourney delivers the most visually impressive results when it comes to atmospheric images, artistic styles and conceptual photography. The tool performs well on images with a specific look: cinematic aesthetics, futuristic spaces, portrait photography with character.
For marketing purposes, Midjourney is strong for:
Limitations: Midjourney works via Discord, handles text within images less accurately and is less suited for product photography with specific brand specifications. The tool follows prompts less literally than competitors.
DALL-E 3, integrated into ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, follows prompts more accurately than Midjourney. If you want a specific composition, a particular colour palette or text within an image, DALL-E succeeds better at this.
For marketing, DALL-E is useful for:
Limitations: the DALL-E style is recognisable and may look less professional for high-end campaigns. The model is more conservative in what it generates for safety reasons.
Adobe Firefly distinguishes itself on one important point: it is trained on licensed images and Adobe Stock material. This makes it legally safer for commercial use. For brands that want certainty around copyright and licensing, this is a significant advantage.
Firefly is directly integrated into Photoshop and other Adobe tools, which greatly simplifies the workflow for design teams. Features like Generative Fill and Generative Expand are directly usable within existing project files.
For marketing, Firefly is strong for:
Limitations: the image quality for fully generated images is currently slightly less impressive than Midjourney on pure aesthetics.
Image quality for campaigns: Midjourney wins, followed by DALL-E, then Firefly.
Legal safety for commercial use: Firefly wins. Adobe guarantees that training data is licensed. With Midjourney and DALL-E, the copyright implications are more complex.
Integration into work processes: Firefly wins for teams already working with Adobe. DALL-E wins for teams working with the OpenAI API or GPT.
None of the three tools is reliable for generating specific products, faces of real people, or images with precise brand details such as logos and typography. For campaigns where brand identity is central, AI imagery is always a starting point, never a finished product. A designer is almost always needed for the final execution.
Midjourney, DALL-E and Firefly are each strong in different areas. The right choice depends on your goal: atmosphere and style, accuracy or legal safety. Those who combine the tools smartly get more value than those who adopt one as a standard.
